Paper Abstract:      This study compared different strategies used in children’s arithmetic learning. 171 fourth-grade students were grouped into three equivalent classes. The two experimental classes used expositive and exploratory teaching models of the shortcut strategy respectively, whereas the controlled group was taught with the teacher’s own method. We found that arithmetic speed and performance of the students in the two experimental classes were increased remarkably after the shortcut strategy training. Moreover, the difference of instructional effect between expositive and exploratory teaching models was not significant. The result of a delayed post-test conducted in the experimental classes after 45 days showed that there was no significant difference between the activating test and inactivating test and the “utilization deficiency” did not happen among the participants.
